Lab report about unknown DNA under fingernails

Cellmark Diagnostics issued this Report of Laboratory Examination on May 8, 1997 to Detective Thomas Trujillo of the Boulder Police Department (Cellmark case F971108, police case P96-21871). The lab performed PCR DNA testing on items received March 4, 1997: a bloodstain from panties, a pubic hair and a head hair from a white blanket, contents of right and left hand fingernail samples, a reagent blank, and reference bloodstains from Patricia Ramsey, John B. Ramsey, JonBenet Ramsey and Melinda Ramsey. DNA from the head hair and from the panties bloodstain came from a female. Patricia, John and Melinda Ramsey were excluded as sources of both, and JonBenet Ramsey could not be excluded. The report estimates the frequency of the shared genetic types at 1 in 12 million in the Caucasian database, 1 in 1.4 billion in the African American database, and 1 in 110 million in the Hispanic database. Both fingernail samples held DNA from more than one person, with a female primary source and a male secondary source. Patricia and Melinda Ramsey were excluded as sources, JonBenet Ramsey could not be excluded as the primary source, John B. Ramsey was excluded as the primary source, and no conclusion was possible about the male secondary source. The pubic hair produced no DNA results, so the lab drew no conclusion about it, and the reagent blank produced no results, which indicates no contamination in the testing process. Charlotte J. Word, Ph.D. and Melisa A. Weber signed the report.
